President Donald Trump fired longtime chief strategist Stephen Bannon on Friday, replacing him with former Alabama Sen. Jeff Sessions.
Trump also promoted Alabama Sen.”s Luther Strange as his attorney general nominee, which he has so far rejected.
Trump’s moves in the aftermath of the deadly Charlottesville protests prompted a growing backlash against his administration and triggered calls for impeachment and a criminal investigation into the president.
In a tweet, Trump accused Bannon of leaking classified information to the media and accused the news media of “fabricating lies and outright lies.”
Bannon left the White House in August after Trump’s first month in office.
He is still listed as a top adviser to Trump.
